The GS era began at the end of the 1970s in the offices and workshops of BMW Motorrad, through the initiative of a number of passionate motorcyclists in the workforce. With the R 80 G/S, the first enduro model was presented to the public in September 1980. It was the start of a success story that is unprecedented to this day.
BMW remains loyal to air-cooled boxer engines in 2025. The vehicle basis consisting of an engine, a one-piece tubular frame with a bolt-on rear frame, a flatly arranged rear shock absorber and a redesigned engine periphery forms a versatile basis for a family with different and independent characters: Roadster, Sportcruiser, Enduro.
The fully adjustable chassis with 210 / 200 mm suspension travel and 255 mm ground clearance is designed for off-road use. The flat solo bench is ideal for freedom of movement while standing. The geometry of the tank provides an intuitive position for knee grip and weight transfer for off-road riding. The R 12 G/S is the only enduro bike in the BMW fleet with an 18" rear wheel, supplemented by grippy enduro footrests, engine protection and handlebar riser in the Enduro package PRO. Accessories include a navigation preparation combined with rally cockpit fairing as well as an engine protection bar.
